What's your GO style?

Post by Joelnelsonb »

This is interesting. My style is "flexible".

This test looks really cool but I can't figure out how to use it (no tech-savvy here). I don't play on kgs so how do I upload my game archive?

I hadn't tried the GoStyle app before, and it's really interesting! It got my rank within the error bars, which was impressive.

Apparently I'm roughly in the midrange on the four dimensions (though maybe a little bit fighty and a little bit experimental) and I push from behind a lot, and rarely cap but maybe should.

Also it strongly recommends I read books I've already read, which I guess means I haven't really taken them in

Same here! :D

I got 'flexible."
Territoriality 5.9
Novelty 6.4
Aggressivity 4.8
Thickness 4.2

It recommends I study Yoda Norimoto. All I remember from the last time I tried this app is that it recommended Dosaku.

I tried the web app.

Rank estimation: 5d ± 2.63

Style -

Territoriality: 6.25 ± 1.4
Novelty: 6.3 ± 1.6
Aggressivity: 7.3 ± 1.4
Thickness: 5.1 ± 1.5

Professionals who have similar style as you:

Luo Xihe
Gu Li
Go Seigen
Yi Se'tol

Professionals whose style is farthest from yours:

Miyazawa Goro
Honinbo Shusaku
Kobayashi Koichi
Honinbo Shuwa

Bad things you play:
You should concrentrate on the concept of sente and gote. Do you ask after every enemy move, Do I need to respond to this? and If so, Do I have a possibility to respond on some unexpected place so that the threat is neutralized, but the opponent in turn has to respond?

So I guess I am shodan now :) Also the use of the word "aggresivity" makes the entire experience transcendent.

Strength
The KGS equivalent of strength of the player: 1d ± 2.63

Style

Territoriality 4.89 ± 1.43 Territory
Novelty 8.71 ± 1.63 Novel
Aggresivity 7.96 ± 1.42 Fighting
Thickness 4.62 ± 1.48 Shinogi

Professionals who have similar style as you:

Go Seigen
Fujisawa Hideyuki
Yuki Satoshi
Gu Li

Professionals whose style is farthest from yours:

Hane Naoki
Honinbo Shusaku
Kobayashi Koichi
Honinbo Shuwa

Study material recommendations

Series

We find the following series of books to be suitable:

91% — Get Strong at Go
51% (slightly easier) — Elementary Go
42% (harder) — Heart of Go Discovery
Books

Apart from the series, we recommend the following single books:

87% — Vital Points and Skillful Finesse for Sabaki
59% (slightly harder) — The Direction of Play
49% (harder) — Invincible: The Games of Shusaku
22% (easier) — Opening Theory Made Easy

Bad things you play

We found out, that you really like to capture stones. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but are you always sure, that the stones you captured are important and the mere 6 points you get for capturing them is the best move on board? (E.g. in the opening, ...)
