If You've seen Nick Sibicky's 100th video lecture where he celebrates by simply playing Go (and getting slightly wasted; hats off to him because my game on ethanol couldn't be worse...) He play's the following opening and has moderate success with it. Since then, I've encountered multiple players giving it a try and I've approached it with different strategies. It appears quite harmless at first glance, however, you soon realize the advantage your opponent is taking by giving himself the ladder in all four corners at the cost of the first move advantage in said corners. So how would you respond? Would you take the empty corners as shown, do something to prevent the ponnuki or something entirely different?

Thinking like a go player during a game of chess is like bringing a knife to a gun-fight. Thinking like a chess player during a game of go feels like getting knifed while you're holding a gun...

You'd lose.
is played out of turn.
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

I almost never play hoshi so I certainly would not play like this. But I think that suitably placed moves by white on the 3-4 points, with mybe one hoshi to counter the ponnuki, is very playable for white.

It's worth noting that "a ponnuki is worth 30 points" refers to a ponnuki which is the
process and shape made by capturing a single stone, i.e. a net tally of 3 moves as your opponent played one which got captured. Building the ponnuki shape with 4 moves whilst your opponent does something else productive is significantly worse.
Black's move 1 and 5 are reasonably efficient and some pro I forget actually did that a few times. Also in the recent changing-name-cup a Hong Kong 6d amateur lpayed tengen plus one-point jump either side against Ke Jie 9p which was interesting:
