Thought I'd introduce myself. I'm 48. I learned Go in high school, when a friend and I basically taught ourselves how to play, with limited resources. We played together through university, where we started a club. However, I got absorbed in my career, and I drifted away from the game. This was mostly before the internet became a thing, to date myself.
Then, at Christmas, one of my in-laws gave her husband a goban, and a few weeks later that Google AI's win made the news... and so I went looking for Go software, found KGS, and SL, and goproblems.com, and this place, and realized that the internet had become an absolutely fantastic resource while I was on hiatus.
I'm looking forwards to picking up where I left off, and to learning from you all.
Greetings all...

Re: Greetings all...
Welcome. But I am curious.
"HowLing, godforsaken frozen northern wilderness" sounds like it is in the northernmost corner of NE China. But your picture does not look Chinese. Why are you living in China and why did it take you so long to play again if you are there?

Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

I've heard that it gets pretty nippy in Harbin, but actually I live in a small town in the upper Ottawa River valley in Ontario, Canada. The area is not exactly a hotbed of Go activity and the bears and moose are not particularly interested in learning, either

Welcome!
Check also https://go-canada.org/Club/List by the Canadian Go Association for Real Life players near your place, also Go Places In Canada on “Sensei’s Library” which is the ultimate Go wiki. If you have other work to do better not visit—I often visit just to look up something and then find that I’m still there HOURS LATER.
And while I’m at it, let me also recommend OGS, the Online Go Server, https://online-go.com, where you can play simply in your browser (i.e. without Java), and which allows not only live but also correspondence games.
