Place to play slow turn-based games online

Post by FlyingAxe »

A lot of people at my workplace (we’re a data science shop), many of whom are from East Asia, became interested in go because of the AlphaGo event. What I am wondering is if there is a place to play long, turn-based games, where one of the players would log in and play a move, then log out; the other player would log in some other time, play a move, etc. The idea is to have a virtual replacement for having a board sitting somewhere in the office, at which one of the players makes a move, time permitting (i.e., without some window being open all the time).

What’s the best resource for this? Is it possible to set up games like this on KGS or pandanet? If not, where?

I currently use online-go.com

There is also dragongoserver.net

I play that way every day on DGS: http://www.dragongoserver.net. I know there are others, and you will no doubt hear about them, but I have not used them. DGS works very well for me.

Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

Hi FlyingAxe,

You may try KGS, and use the Resume feature to continue your game(s).

I heard OGS is another possibility.

This forum, too, but it takes a little bit of editing. :)

I wouldn't recommend using KGS to play correspondence games, as leaving the board with the game in progress will mark you as an escaper so after some games you will start to forfeit the games. Servers designed for correspondence play (like OGS/DGS) have many useful features for correspondence play such as private board notes or conditional moves.

I would recommend ogs. I played on ogs and dgs and ogs has better features in my opinion. Besides you can play faster timed games as well.
