The almost forgotten GLOBIS Cup

Post by macelee »

The 3rd GLOBIS Cup, an international tournament for young stars, is ongoing now. There are quite a few interesting games. Unfortunately the timing of this event is so bad that it is completely overshadowed by the Ing Cup. So it gets almost no mention in media.

The Chinese Sina Weiqi, a major source of Go news, did not say a word about this event, apart from publishing some game records. I went to the American Go Association site, trying to find some background information on Justin Ching, the NA representative. The event was not mentioned there either.

Earlier on I read that a Taiwanese player had to abandon his position in the Globis Cup, because he also won a position in the Ing Cup.

Other people in this forum talked about Japan's 'pride' - not willing to make adjustment when there's schedule conflict. The result, as can be seen here, is bad for some players, bad for the sponsor, bad for Go in general. I've got no time to compile all these games on the same days when there are other major events. And even if I do, fans don't have time to browse these games I guess.

Li Qincheng is the winner, Hsu Chiayuan is the runner-up.

The winner prize is 3,000,000 JPY. (Japanese Kisei winner gets 45,000,000 JPY in comparison)

Good! You inspired me to sort my Globis games. Maybe you are interested in a few more games from the preliminaries.
