Hello to all :)

Post by way2go »

I've been active on the OGS forum, and I recognize some of the same names here :D . In February, I discovered Go while looking for a new board game to play with the family. I was hooked in a single afternoon of researching it. My goal is to teach three kids, ages 7, 10, and 14.

L19 has some great book recommendations. After checking out those posts, I ordered the Level Up series, which looks like exactly what we need. Now we're waiting not-so-patiently for it to arrive. The kids will be catching up to me in short order, and then we will all be learning together.

Last month I tried and failed to get OGS to add a Beginners category. Since you already have one ready-made here, I will head on over there and start reading. Looking forward to getting to know the L19 community and learning more about this fascinating game.

LOL, you didn’t “fail”, it’s just that some things have the motion dynamics of a supertanker ;-)

EdLee, it looks like you welcome all the newcomers here. Thank you for the time that takes. Everyone likes to see replies to their first posts.

Ah! Good to know. After no response for weeks, I pretty much gave up on the idea, but maybe you are right and it still might happen.

Hi Way2Go,

Thanks for the FreePik reference.
Does it require special software to 'use' the vector graphics ?
Please just call me Ed. :)

Hi, Ed,

Here is the support page with directions for how to edit a vector file: http://support.freepik.com/hc/en-us/art ... m-Freepik-

I've used Adobe Illustrator for editing other vector images (not from FreePik). Inkscape is a free, open source alternative to Illustrator: https://inkscape.org/en/#overview

Welcome to the site! I'm always glad to see new folks about. :-) Good luck teaching your kids; I'd love to hear how that goes.

I don't think he/she actually said whose kids they were, but welcome regardless of whose kids you are teaching. :)
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

The kids are part of our extended family, so I consider them "mine." :)

Thanks for asking. So far, all three have started on the easy problems at GoChild. The oldest has also done Igowin Tutor. I have explained the bare minimum to play Capture Go, and we had two 9x9 boards going at the same time. I was playing the 14-yr-old, while the younger two were playing each other. Somehow the youngest, as black, managed to build a shape very similar to a ladder (which I haven't explained yet). Black captured most of white's stones all at once. They were so excited! But I wish I had been watching their game to see how they did it.

When my boy was three I taught him Go. He was already playing Backgammon. The problem I have with him now he's five is that he would prefer to play anything but Go. He still enjoys it (I had a game with him this morning at 6am), but he was far more keen when he didn't know about the App Store. I'm not going to force him.. when he wants a game we play. Oh he also got a bit lazy. He found the auto-scoring feature of SmartGo Kifu and so uses that instead of counting the territories.

There is a site called Go Child? That might be worth a look though maybe not suitable for the older ones. There is also an App in the iOS store of Go problems for children. Colour and pictures.

Well, Tom, you were right. OGS has added a new Beginners category. You may now say, "I told you so." :D

Haha, please just always keep in mind that our devs anoek and matburt are doing all this in their free time, OGS is NOT a company with huge resources, and also please remember that they both have families and children … we’re all happy to have this category now. Your contributions are appreciated.
