Possible sandbagging or just lazy play on my part?

Post by tekesta »

I just played this game on OGS against "pareod", rated 12k. I am White in this game. Result is B + 64.5. Either I was playing rather idly or this 12k was actually stronger than his stated rating. One mistake I recognize is that I allowed him to gain a lot of territory and strong center positions early in the game. Much obliged in advance for your comments.

Stronger players can tell me my comments are no good, but:

:w72: looks like it's as good as a pass to me.

:w106: should play to connect the stones on the right to the ones on the top. Don't play out the ladder.

:b107: Capturing with a net (L11 instead of L10) is generally preferable to capturing with a ladder.

:w14: is the first major strategic mistake on your part: it's better to just tenuki and give up that stone for now as it is outnumbered (in an overconcentrated way for black) and saving it doesn't have any threat to black, just makes a liability for you.

I wouldn't pick out 72 for criticism: yes it might not be the best move on the board but it's not a pass as if black ignores white's capture does give black some worrisome cutting points. There are plenty of worse moves before it, such as 48 or 70 (can p3).

Certainly misquoting but: "One stone vs one stone... maybe tenuki. One stone vs two stones... never tenuki. One stone vs three stones... always tenuki!"

(Regarding questions of rank - your opponent has a lot more wins than losses, but their rank is based on a reasonably large number of rated games (60-some) and it's generally trending upward - I think they're probably just in a period of rapid improvement and you're not the only scalp they're likely to claim on the way.)
