Kaya is pretty stinky!

Post by fwiffo »

I knew Kaya was supposed to have a distinctive smell, but I didn't realize it would be this intense. My whole place smells sandlewoody.

The bowls are gorgeous too. What kind of wood?

The board is 3.4 sun one-piece masame. The bowls are beautifully figured yaku-sugi cedar. Pictures don't do them justice. The stones are snow grade, size 36. I didn't originally intend to go for such thick stones, but I really liked this pair of bowls and they were quite large and I didn't want them to feel too empty. I will get used to the size!

I'm sure some of you will know where I got these and can track down more pictures. :)

Congrats on your Kuroki set.

Over time, please keep us posted whether you find size 36:
- perfect for you;
- still too thick;
- too thin. :mrgreen:

*estimates the total cost of a one-piece 3.4 sun masame board, yaku-sugi cedar bowls and size 36 snow grade stones*

*splutters*

*coughs*

I saw the yaku-sugi bowls on Kurokigoishi some weeks ago and thought "wow, those are striking".

(By the way, as a fellow owner of a board from Kurokigoishi, I can confirm that the smell is amazing and it will hang around the board for many months).

Its a really great set. I feel like I've pulled up at a set of lights in my "pride & joy" BMW 3-series and I glance across as you come shimmering past in a new Porsche 911 :D

Question: how does the board sound when you put down a stone? I'm curious if kaya table boards sound different from kaya floor boards.

I am curious too.
If there's a difference, it will probably also be because of the glass table without using a tatami, table cloth or something like that.
