Segoe Tesuji Dictionary

Post by Monkey »

Hello. I have been looking for a Japanese book titled 手筋事典, otherwise known as Segoe Tesuji Dictionary. Here is the link to sesnseis for this book:
http://senseis.xmp.net/?SegoeTesujiDictionary

I tried to order this book from kinokuniya like senseis suggests, but they canceled my order because I suppose they can't get it any longer. Does anyone know how I could obtain these books? I live in the US.

Hey guys, I just got these books today and I have a question. Which book is which? I can't figure out which one is the first in the series. The only distinguishing characters on the cover of the books that I can see are the following, but they don't make much sense to me when translated on google translate:

上 - on
下 - under
中 - in

I thought at first that these might be numbers, but that's clearly not the case. My guess is that they refer to a specific type of tesuji, and maybe the google translation isn't the best. Does anyone know a more proper translation for these chinese characters, and which book is volume 1, 2, 3, etc.?

Thanks!

In context:

上 - vol. 1
中 - vol. 2
下 - vol. 3

Hmm, interesting. I guess I can see the pattern now. It's like the books are stacked on top of each other and the first one is "on" the others, etc.

Hi Monkey,

To supplement what Bill said:

For a trilogy:
上 - vol. 1 ( upper/ascending volume )
中 - vol. 2 ( middle volume )
下 - vol. 3 ( lower/descending volume )

For a two-volume set:
上 - vol. 1 ( upper/ascending volume )
下 - vol. 2 ( lower/descending volume )

( That's why Bill wrote "In context". :) )

Yea, I can see how the characters even look like that. The volume 1 character looks like it's placed on top of something, the vol. 2 character looks like it's in the middle of something, and the vol. 3 character looks like it is holding something up.

Thanks guys!

For 上 / 下, originally there was only a small horinzontal line above / below a larger horizontal line.
The vertical stroke was later added for clarity.

For 中, it is thought that this should symbolise an arrow that goes through the centre of a target.

Unless the content of the third volume belongs logically between the other two :)

Or the author of a three volume set who then decides to write volume 4. And there's no logical fix for that case :P

Sounds like the perfect case for a reissue and the hopefully pending resale of earlier volumes.
