My opponent starts with a high, influence-oriented move.
When I look just at the corner, my natural reaction is to play joseki and invade at 'a' or maybe 'b'.

Click Here To Show Diagram Code [go]$$Wc However, I recall that Nagahara, in his book entitled 'Handicap Go', says that in the opening, black's should look to maintain his lead in influence.
Fortunately, Magicwand has conceded open book to me, so I can quote Nagahara directly. He says that black's main goal should be "dominance in the center". He goes on to say that "Turning influence into territory is the problem of the middle game."
So let that advice be the initial framework upon which I shall hang my strategy: contest him on influence...nay...
dominate him on influence. Territory shall be a secondary goal.
Alas, Nagahara does not say exactly how to tell when the importance of those two goals has reversed. I guess that I will have to figure that out on the fly.
But, for now, I shall play the most influence-oriented move possible: tengen!

By far the most common reply to the high approach is the one-space jump. ( Dailyjoseki lists it at 55% )

The third most common ( at about 8% ) is to tenuki. Again, MW could then start a fight with a double approach, with results at least as risky as the second option.
