Not very happy with today's results though, only person I wanted to win that won is Shi Yue :(

I'm a Japanese fan, but perhaps I'm realistic enough to not really hoping an upset in Ke Jie game. :D.

And Poor Fang Laoshi, losing like that. And it's especially bad how the chinese commenters are acting. I mean, did you seriously expect Fang laoshi to win? There's no shame in losing to Shin Jinseo... Fang Laoshi probably already feels really bad about the game.

About Mr. Fang's game, I think he misread when Shin does the hane at D12, and then he just wants to play the whole sequence to have a good place to resign. Thought I personally think that if he play C7 instead of B8, the game would be still playable, the pros might think that the gap is already too huge to catch up.

Shin seems to be good in calculation, he usually outplays older pros that probably cannot compete with him in that matter (remember his match with Cho Chikun in the SS Cup?)

Yeah, he probably realized the mistake quite quickly, but as Peng laoshi says, for an older player to have a chance against these super strong young players, they have to be leading in the opening, because there's no way they can compete in the endgame.

If he's already behind in the opening, then he really doesn't have a chance anymore.

Ida was doing quite well IMO, especially after he lived in the middle. But then he screwed up :(

When is the 4th round? http://igokisen.web.fc2.com/wr/xa.html has no date so I'm guessing not soon.

Maybe Fang Tianfeng was trying to set a record for the shortest pro game? He was some way off the mark though:

33 moves in 1965 from mirror of Bozulich's Magic of Go series:
http://gostart.ru/e044.html

Yuki Sataoshi wins in 38 moves with commentary by Dinersteain, plus other records sourced from msoworld site that's now offline (maybe in old GoGoD?)

Short counted games:

This is not unusual. I've been reading a collection of 4 books talking about very short professional games. The set of books covers 50 or so games which are all quite short.

The shortest official pro game is 2 moves. The shortest with proper play is 20 moves. The shortest between 9-dans is 38 moves. The shortest lost on time is 43 moves.

according to Sina, this game is tied at 53 moves for a game in an international tournament, although the other game was only a prelim game, and not in the main round. One of the guys misread a ladder and resigned.

There are only a handful of games in the main rounds of international tournaments that are less than 100 moves.

gosensations from msoworld wrote:Cao Dayuan 9-dan resigned after 48 moves against Takemiya Masaki 9-dan in the final of the 3rd TV Go Asia Championship on 30 August 1991. This is also the shortest international game we have.

Maybe they didn't know about this one, or discounted it being blitz.
Howevever, when I check go4go it has what I presume is that game with 129 moves! "[1991-08-30] 3rd Asian TV Cup, final Takemiya Masaki 9p (Black) vs. Cao Dayuan 9p (White) B+R (5.5 komi)": http://www.go4go.net/go/games/sgfview/7973

Yeah, I don't know what's up with that, but I don't think they count the Asian TV cup. Only the "big" international tournaments.

I had to check his name on Sensei's Library, turns out he was doing the count-down in the NHK cup not so long ago (and was 2-3 dan I guess). I remember seeing him playing in the said tournament a couple of months ago and wondering how he got 7-dan so quick :)

A rising star: finished top of the Honinbo league with 6-1 and started the Honinbo title match vs Iyama today.

4th round was a few days ago, and 5th today. Winners in bold.

4th round:
Zhou Ruiyang vs. Shin Jiseo
Ke Jie vs. Lian Xiao
Tan Xiao vs. Li Zhe
Shi Yue vs. Peng Liyao

Li and Peng winning were both upsets, but not huge ones (#47 beats #10 and #33 beat #14 from goratings). Li is an interesting player in that he went to university as well as being a pro with a rather unconventional style (and wrote some interesting posts on AlphaGo that were translated to English). Zhou played some Master-esque moves: viewtopic.php?p=219067#p219067. Ke's play was interesting too making a giant seki.

5th round
Ke Jie vs Li Zhe
Zhou Ruiyang vs Peng Liyao
Edit: xiayun says best of 3 so above only 1st game.

We seem to have duplicate threads on this (due to character encoding problems?): viewtopic.php?p=219126#p219126

No wonder Zhou Ruiyang has a nickname 'Alpha Goat' (Goat = Yang in Chinese) ;-)
