The proper name is actually Etland Cup, King of Kings, and the groups were initially Phoenixes (players over 50), White Tigers (players aged 25-50) and Green Dragons (players under 25).

In Term 2 this was modified by the addition of a fourth group for women - Vermilion Sparrows.

Presumably they played mahjong on the side.

Etland itself was an interesting name: an abbreviation of Electron Land.

I'm having a running argument with one of my daughters whether vermilion is red or orange. I say red but she, and most women here, say orange. Sparrows dissing Phoenixes. What is the world coming to?

Phoenixes for over 50s, eh? Beats Dead Ducks. ;)

I've heard the age for 'seniors' in the GG Auction Cup has been reduced to over 45, enabling Lee Changho 9p to participate last year. Quite fittingly, he played against Cho Hyeyeon 9p for the final game, losing by half a point.

Although many of us may start planning for retirement soon by those standards.

Looks like the group names come from the Four Symbols:
