Who's your Go Idol ?

Except for the expected ones (Go, Shusaku, Jowa) from an earlier era I am surprised that so many people of mentioning only players from the last 20 years or so. Someone mentioned Kitani but except for my two choices (Sakata, Shuko) there seems to be none from 1900-1970. Why is this?

I'll pick Takagawa. I'm surprised that no mention was made of great players like Ishida (Yoshio), Rin (Kaiho) and Kato (Masao). I guess the younger generation just isn't familiar with that era of go. They don't have back issues of Go Review or Go World and the names don't appear on the internet very much.

These were the players I started to follow when I started playing 'seriously', so they are much more present in my mind as real people than players from even 30-40 years ago. So I guess they come up as 'idols' much more than the 'classics'.

For the few games I saw from them, I'd say Kato Masao and Takemiya Masaki.

Why? He's that different kind of genius. At first his teacher Cho Hun Hyeon wondered that he was not able to replay his games and lateron, he even surpased his teacher (who himself was and is one of the strongest players) and became the dominating player for quite some time. I also like how he was repeatedly underestimated by his oppponents (like Cho Chikun) - they only came to appreciate his strength once they played against him. With his calm style, the opponent sometimes even did not know why he lost.

Sensei's says: "Quoting loosely his teacher, Cho HunHyun, Lee sits and waits patiently in the depths of the unknown. You wait and wait to find out what Lee hides in the depths. You finally run out of patience and jump into the deep. Without fail, you find yourself trapped in the depths.

my favourite pro players are Yamashita Keigo ( when he was younger and had more fighting spirit) Iyama Yuta,Cho U,Kang Dongyun, Gu Li and Go Seigen!
But many others are also very cool ^^

To clarify, I enjoy watching any pro with an aggressive or violent style, like Choi Cheolhan, Gu Li, Lee Sedol, etc.

I just really enjoy Cho Hunhyun's games.

Actually, I have studied more pro games of Ishida Yoshio than of any other pro (thanks to the book [sl=The1971HoninboTournament]The 1971 Honinbo Tournament[/sl]). Right now though, I do not have a favorite pro player. Well, other than [sl=AkiraToya]this one[/sl].

After reading about his style of play in Sensei's Library, I've come to like Otake Hideo's games. Those games are also very good learning material for shape and proper moves.

Miao's playing was amazing at one point in time. The last time I watched it, it was stiff. It's probably because it was after a whole day of him playing.

I'm starting to play the amazing joseki inventions of Takemiya, they make for a really awesome position.

Gan Siyang, Gu Li, Go Seigen, Cho HunHyun and Lee Changho are obvious. I feel like I will enjoy replaying games by Ma Xiaochun, Michael Redmond (sacs stones for moyo) and Yoda.

I don't find him a stereotypical choice. I remember a similar thread on GD asking about favorite Honinbous and only two~three people out of all of the posts brushed his name by as suggestion. His name is known by many, but his game by few. Quite a shame. For reference, his style earlier is entirely different from his style later.

I don't have an answer to your question, though I also would choose Shuko.
