Serious influence game

Recently there have been a few mentions of O Meien and his Zone Press Park, and about playing styles, so I thought it might be interesting to share a recent game of his vs. Takemiya Masaki. Here we have an awesome example of what happens when two players are dead set on playing for influence. Thanks to Go4Go for the permission to share this game for discussion.

Yes, this game was played at a go festival back in August. I suppose they decided ahead of time to play to the gallery. It's a lot of fun, isn't it?

If you click on the top line of oren's link (above where it says noryo) you will see another picture, which shows a rather encouraging snapshot of current Japanese go. It's a full hall - mostly men but not all old men by any means (no doubt uberdude would disagree but then I would point out that uberdude is getting older by the minute...).

These "Cool of the Evening" (noryo) events began in 2014 and have been held in Tokyo and Osaka. They seem to have been popular and do feature quite a lot of games. It has stretched from two days to four days now. The format has also varied a bit. Initially the highlight was a "Battle of the Generations" but the O-Takemiya game has replaced that with an "Old Masters" game. Another interesting games this year was Shibano Toramaru vs Iyama Yuta, and Shibano won! Sign of the times?

The "Cool of the (Summer) Evening" is more traditionally celebrated with floating lanterns and fireworks displays, so no doubt the players - around 40 pros were on duty in Tokyo this year - feel under pressure to produce some fireworks of their own.
