Guessing, based on the grain and color, is that it's spruce. Really nice looking, in particular the grain on the face.A.o.D wrote:Hi everyone. I have just bought a new Goban secondhand. Can anyone help me identify the wood?

Re: Help me identify the wood of my Goban
Others are more knowledgeable on this, and there is very limited information, but my guess would be it is kaya, not shin-kaya or spruce.
I find it a very nice, but also an intriguing board.
How/what explains the difference in (tone of) color top and side?
Both top surface and beautiful legs are indications to me it may be kaya and not spruce.
Where/how/from whom did you acquire this board?

Re: Help me identify the wood of my Goban
My wife found a man that deals in Japanese antiques,'not specifically go equipment' to get a board or off Japan. He insisted it is the real deal and suggested it could be as old as 1950's but couldn't say for sure. It cost me $600 australian dollars. To get it to my door. Board, stones and bowls.
