I do notice that, on iPhome SE, just taking the screenshot gives me the file with png extension, but if I use the tool to crop, I get jpeg extension.

Seems I can upload both though

Currently on iOS 11.4 - maybe that's more important than the phone model.

Is it possible to upload animated GIFs here? I've got a 20-frame animation I want to share, size 4.1Mb. When I try to upload the file it looks as though it's working OK, but after about 30 seconds I get an error message saying "The image file you tried to attach is invalid." Have I hit a size limit (and if so, what exactly is the limit?), or is it a different problem?
