GoUniverse disconnected

Post by Javaness2 »

I found that after the KGS server side update (!) that GoUniverse would not allow me to connect anymore. Ouch.
Then I found ShinKGS was the same. Okay.
Then I noticed the end of the rank graph had a gap. Annoying.

Yes, we are aware of these issues, and working on them. ShinKGS will likely be fixed first as Lee had that set up locally to run properly. Server move was a little bumpy, but we are moving forward.

Thanks. Is there a status page where you can monitor the update?

https://senseis.xmp.net/?KGSServerStatus could be used to give a message about what is happening.

More widely, some people still seem not to know about the various clients which are available now.
British Go Association doesn't advertise GoUniverse or ShinKGS https://www.britgo.org/gopcres/play.html
Germany doesn't mention them either http://www.dgob.de/
and for France the same http://ffg.jeudego.org/php/jouerSurInternet.php

If you don't advertise the alternative clients properly, many people will assume it is java only. Those who cannot reconfigure java to be able to play will just not try out kgs.

The raw .jar file for Linux and the Android app don't seem to have been updated, either.

Thanks. I saw that a Twitter account had been created, but it doesn't provide any detailed information as to what is broken at the minute, and if somebody is working on fixing that.

Sorry, but after 10 days why is GoUniverse still unable to connect?
It's the best HTML client.

https://github.com/IlyaKirillov/GoUniverse/issues/66

This basically means that all web clients not hosted by gokgs.com no longer work and kill off third-party web client development.

I don't like to ascribe to malice that which can be explained by incompetence but if AGF really decided to close off the JSON protocol it would be very ethically suspected in my opinion. ShinKGS written mainly by Justin Kramer and open source under a MIT license. By closing off the JSON protocol, it means all the time spent and hard work done by him and other developers would be to the AGF's benefit and no one else since they are the only one able to run ShinKGS.

According to Twitter the issue is being worked on. That is a relief to me as it means the best HTML client isn't going to be blocked.

Sorry for the long delay in resolving this issue, it proved surprisingly tricky. GoUniverse is back up now, and seems to be fully functional.

This is great news. For anyone who can't get Java working on their machine, GoUniverse is the best alternative client.

Is GoUniverse available only as a Chrome extension?

Yes, only as a Chrome extension. It works great on any desktop computer though, as long as it has Chrome on it. Macs run it fine, and it also works on newer Chromebooks that allow extensions.
