Controversy at Samsung Cup

Post by hiyayang »

There was a bit controversy at the preliminary event of Samsung Cup that just concluded. After the referee counted the game and determined White won by half a point, Black disputed the result, claiming that she accidentally put a captured white stone back in White's bowl, which is probably true, given the fact that White filled the last dame and the komi was 6.5 (assuming no seki etc. I suppose). The referee asked them to replay the game to verify Black's claim, but White refused. In the end a rematch was ordered to settle the dispute.

Interesting. I don't know much about the rules in high level events, but why does white have the right to ignore the referee's request to replay the game?

Sounds like a weird situation as well as a weird solution.

Could they not just have counted the stones that were played? (stones on the board + captures)
This would quickly tell if there is a white stone "missing." (put back into the white bowl)

If my opponent had refused to replay the game, I would have refused a rematch

I agree with what the others said. What right does White have to refuse to replay the game?

rule is not chinese rule.
when korean player plays chinese rule we follow their rule.
now if chinese players are playing korean rule then they also must follow the rule which means keep your captured stone.
it can be considered as if the player take the ko without ko threat so disqualified. not following the rule.
but she got one more chance of rematch instead.(it really didnt help her because she still lost on that rematch)

i think rematch was fair decision.

I have never heard of such a situation. Clearly both players knew the real outcome: they don't need stones in the bowl to tell them. So if white lost then he knew it. On the other hand, is seems unreasonable to think that black would make the claim if it were not true.

If white lost and refused to recount and black made a mistake and "lost" a stone then they are both at fault and, in my opinion, should probably both has lost the game. Given that the rules probably don't allow for that the replay probably seems like the best option. But I think the whole affair was not a pleasant one and reflects badly on both players.
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

Well, I don't know how much discretion the ref has, but it's an option to give the next round opponent a bye.
