Learning Go Through Old Chinese Games

Post by tekesta »

Hello everyone! How are you feeling today?

How's this for a radical idea? Has anyone here thought about learning Go exclusively through the study of old Chinese games by players like Huang Longshi (1651-1700) and Guo Bailing (1587-1662) and playing games under the old Chinese rules (complete with group tax of 2 points per living group more than the opponent)? I was thinking of it as an academic exercise, whose benefits can carry over to competitive play under modern Go rules, should the student choose to engage in that as well.
