Ownership?
I read on SL that KGS is no longer associated with Kiseido.
Does anyone know who owns the KGS Go Server these days?

Re: Ownership?
William Shubert owns it, and has for about the past 4 years, I think.

Re: Ownership?
You may be right. Kiseido left about 4 years ago. I don't know exactly what the deal was before that.
The surest way to find out is to send a PM to Schubert. He is 'wms' on this site.

Oh yeah like '' Hi Shubert how are you? By the way is it true that you are not the owner of this site? ''

Re: Ownership?
KGS was originally called igoweb and had no association with Kiseido at all. Bill wrote it all himself and has always been the sole owner. Kiseido sponsored it with financial help from the early days and so Bill changed the name to the "Kiseido Go Server". However, Kiseido stopped providing money and so he decided to change the name. The acronym KGS was so firmly established that he decided to just go with that. KGS no longer is an abbreviation for anything, just like BP is no longer officially British Petroleum. Last time I spoke to Bill about it, several years ago, he was peeved that the Kiseido web site continued to say "Play Go online on the Kiseido Go Server (KGS)" (it still does) but he did not think it worth making a fuss.
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

Re: Ownership?
I think you're looking for the term "truck number".
I always imagined, now that Kiseido's sponsorship is gone, that KGS stood for "KGS Go Server".

Please call him "Shubert-san", or better "Shubert-sama" as we all do.

I always heard it referred to as the "Mack truck theory".
I am guessing that if anything happened to wms we would have to rely on glue to hold it all together.
