I agree, this makes a lot of sense. However, speaking generally for myself, it's always hard to know when that's going to be received more favourably than not, and vice versa. I'm a big believer in not implementing what I think should happen when the forum seems to be happily engaging in something not strictly against TOS (like going off topic). If this does happen, it would be really useful if people raised a report just to say "Everyone's now talking about {topic}, please can it have it's own thread?"
That way, we'll probably act on it, though I'm not sure if that's an admin only power on here.
