New tournament in Japan

A new event has been announced in Japan. Called the New Ryusei, it will be sponsored by the Igo/Shogi Channel for premium subscribers.

It will be a KO with 32 players, leading to a best-of-three final. The participants will be 16 players from Ryusei final section, 8 past Ryusei champions, 6 players from winners and runners-up of 2020 women's events and/or past Women's Kisei winners, 2 recommendees by the Igo/Shogi Channel. Where more than the specified number of qualifiers exist, the most recent will be invited.

It looks like Sumire gets in as a recommendee but she is slated to play Iyama Yuta in Round 1. It starts on 27 May 2021.

Time limits are 1 minute per move with 5 seconds Fischer timing increments. Even the announcement describes this as "super-fast with no time to breathe", so it is clearly a Mickey Mouse event. However, and it's a big however, these will not be classed as official games for promotions, and the declared intent is to produce spectacular upsets as exhibition games for the premium audience.

When Donald Duck was asked for his opinion, he said went cross-eyed and said "QuAAAAck". Goofy looked goofy but wagged his tail. If Sumire beats Iyama, expect all the organisers to wag their tails, too, with their eyeballs out on stalks. Buy your shares in I/SC now!

Sounds fun for members but not something that's going to provide entertainment for me in the US. I won't be able to watch it and even if I could, surely the normal game commentary that I enjoy won't be able to happen with such short time controls. Anyway, more Go is good.

Well... this game has already happened (22/9). Iyama won, I don't know how was the match, but at least, we already have the first official game between Iyama and Sumire.

First, my apologies for the new thread on this. If any mod wants to erase that one, feel free.

Second, I couldn't find the sgf for the game with Cho Chikun, so I transcribed it. Black 61 and 63 seem to be key. I don't THINK I made... er... kept any mistakes, so, if you're so inclined, feel free to use it elsewhere.

PS: I checked something with my phone. With 30sec reading time and using a human flavoured AI, after some hundred iterations and 20+ depth, those two questionable moves... are the preferred option.

Hm... is there any reason to Black 119 besides timesuji? My phone AI likes it, but I'd have said extending towards M13 or something similar would be more useful...

Also, while I'm at it... This is something that pops up often when I try to understand games. B 101 in the (3,2) corner. As far as I can understand that, the difference between B and W playing there first is about 10 points. Either one makes 4-6 points in the corner and the opponent loses same. Can I understand that the value of previous moves up to that point was above that? Sure, sometimes there are cascading effects of a move and all that. In general terms, I mean.

Well, yes, it gives White a choice between J13 and G11. But, is reaching towards to top really that bad an idea? Am I overcomplicating things?
