Response To Attachment/Hane

Post by gofan32 »

So this is a bit of silly question and apologize if this is wrong place for this, but I've had this pattern in a couple games and was wondering what the proper response is?

Game wise I played this, but for some reason it feels like a mistake, or rather there would be faster or more valuable move?

Katago seems to push for M17, though I'm not quite sure why?

When white played the tiger's mouth at A, white got great shape. It would have been nice if black had played there, first.

But now that white has the good shape, locally, just play somewhere else. White already has good shape there, so there's no need to keep playing locally.

The response to the shape issue does make sense, but if black does that and plays somewhere else like M17 why exactly isn't black worried about a potential push by white say from A to B, C, or D?

White playing at B, C or D doesn't threaten Black's life. It only increases White's potential in the center by a few points. On the other hand, if White could block at M17, White would make a lot more points on the upper side.

I wouldn't say that Black playing at B is a big mistake though. Even if White plays M17 next, Black's move at B increases its potential on the left side so it makes sense.

The double hane is huge.

Even without the follow-up of the double hane, m17 is simply bigger than g14 because it stopes white making loads of points on the top side.
