I think there's some element of discrimination there, however, I wouldn't necessarily group everyone in the entire country together as having that mindset. There's probably some element of discrimination in every country... Maybe more common in some countries than others.
What's portrayed in the media is a whole other story. You can see various narratives in US media, as well, even though not everyone agrees with it.
I'm sorry you had a bad experience. It'd be good if people were more accepting of one another.
