A series of exquisite disasters on 13x13

Post by tekesta »

Today I played a total of 8 games against the following opponent on OGS. All the games are 13x13. I was brutalized in this series ^^; Though, today I'll submit just 3 of them. I have some ways to go before getting to 4k.

You opening looks a bit slow. You tend to add stones to a region where you already have stones, while large areas are still open or while a corner hasn't been approached yet. A general principle is that, at the beginning of the game, it is better to start a new group rather than add a stone to an already strong group.

Like in the last 2 games: can't you find a better move than move 7?

Any recommendation will be welcome. Getting to 5k is harder than I thought.

Black 7 is a timid move on my part, at least because I've had to deal with invasions in previous 13x13 games. In the 2nd game this move at 5-11 might have been better. Black 7 at 11-7 would have been better in the 3rd game. This player is strong and I have not been able to beat him/her at all. Almost won one, though. I will post it in a separate thread.

For game 2, I agree that move 7 at 5-11 would have been better.

For game 3, if you were afraid of invasions in the corner, then either learn invasion sequences (I believe you can find them on josekipedia), or learn them by trial and error, or don't play a big shimari but a small shimari instead. Anyway for Black 7 I would rather approach the lower left corner (3-5 or 4-5) or attach (4-4). This follows the proverb "corners, then sides, then center".

Other remark on game 3:
* at move 41 maybe the atari (7-10) would have been better.
* at move 51, why not hane (9-1)? You get more points this way, and it's still sente.
