Post by lichigo »

Hello,

I am reading robert jasiek's books and Ibsaw this postion. It is 2/3 move endgame.
Is it a 1⅓ move in the traditional endgame theory?

Thank you

Traditional endgame theory has not clarified the count of a basic endgame ko. The closest you can do when trying to interpret traditional endgame theory is to calculate it for modern endgame theory, then interpret the move value of the initial position for traditional endgame theory. Since the initial position of Problem 68 is a local gote with the modern move value 2/3, you would then convert this to the traditional move value by multiplying by 2. That is 1 1/3 indeed. However, it would be an exaggeration to say that traditional endgame theory would be able to determine this move value within the traditional endgame theory itself. If some traditional author produced this value, he has likely done so accidentally because typically books about traditional endgame theory have inconsistent evaluations and calculations of local endgames involving kos.

Some traditional books, on different pages, label a basic endgame ko with the move values 1/2, 1/3, "in between 0 and 1" or the like. So do not expect traditional endgame theory to know how to evaluate local endgames with an active ko in their initial position. Instead, apply modern endgame theory (at least to kos)!
