Do Chinese pros really play less than Japanese/Korean pros?

Post by Elom0 »

A look at mamumamu and first of all the amount of games pros seem to be required to play per year seems excessive, except for the Beijing-controlled China pros. But does it only seem that way? Are they more opaque as an organisation and most are not aware of all the games? I don't know.

On a second note, when the preliminary stages of most international tournaments are difficult to find making a rating system isn't easy, haha.

I don't know about the Chinese tournaments, but I took a look at the Win-loss ranking of Japan, China, Korea in https://gotoeveryone.k2ss.info

In Japan, Ichiriki Ryo has played 26 games in 2022. Kono Mitsuki has played 10, is the player with less games played in that list.
In China, Li Xuanhao has played 20, and Lu Minquan has played 12.
In Korea, Kim Changhoon has played 37 and Kim Myeonghoon has played 25.

Those are only the players with more and less games in the list of the best records. A rough sample. But it looks like Chinese and Japanses pros play more or less the same, and Korean pros play a lot more.

Actually except few top players, most of those normal pros have no game to play this year. The Chinese GO Championship already stopped because of the covid.

I think those are for only international tournaments. If you include domestic tournaments, then I think the Koreans and Japanese at least appear to play much more . . .

Be careful when looking at only a couple of months. The Chinese New Year falls in February and therefore Chinese pros play many fewer games in February than any other month of the year. It would be better to look at full-year figures for 2021 than the first few months of 2022.
