Baduk Doctor plays Chess

Post by gowan »

Many of us may have watched the Youtube channel for Baduk Doctor, a former Korean yeonguseng (insei), teacher, and manager of a go salon in Hong Kong. He is quite a strong go player, routinely winning fast games from Chinese and Japanese pros on line. It might not be well known that he is learning Western chess on his own and is posting videos of games on Youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yJe6IcjPZw His chess channel, unsurprisingly, is titled Chess Doctor. He's a class C chess player so we can learn something from his lack of self-consciousness in presenting his chess on Youtube.

Looks like he is having lot of fun and I enjoyed the video.

I doubt what you said about him being a "class C" player. Maybe this was a typo? Class C implies OTB rating in the range 1400 - 1600 but he is 1000 - 1200 in rapid on chess.com. Anyway.

Yeah, looking at him play in this video he is not Class C yet. But he's very smart and has a ton of experience with another abstract board game; if he's motivated and plays and studies regularly I bet he can get up to at least 1800.

In general I find it really entertaining to watch people who are really good at one thing try to learn to do another thing.
