Radeon 6600 + Linux... avoid for the moment

Post by Ferran »

Now, I admint I'm a tad rusty with Linux system administration. It's generally gotten good enough that you do't usually need to delve into it as deep as you used to. But...

I wanted to do some training this summer, and some tests. Since I needed a new card (to give you an idea: my old one was fanless), I tried a Radeon. Basically, the only thing I could find in short time, from a trusted seller, was a 6600. After two weeks (not continuously, but several days in all), several distro branches and releases of both the distribution and AMD's supposedly open software, I swapped it out today for a 3060.

It might change in the future, but... AMD's drivers for NEW hardware were still using distributions that had been End of Life'd, and very few modern ones. Among other things. So, if you want to install that, start up your coffee maker. It's going to be a ride.

Take care.
