Promoting Go in East England

Post by bugcat »

These are the currently most easterly English Go clubs according to the BGA club map (https://britgo.org/clubs/map), together with their distance in miles from the east coast as measured in a latitudinally straight line, rounded to the nearest ten.

* Newcastle and environs (on the coast)
* York (30 miles inland)
* Leeds and environs (60)
* Sheffield (70)
* Lincoln (30)
* Nottingham (50)
* Birmingham and environs (130, yes 130)
* Cambridge (60)
* Stevenage and environs (60)
* St Albans (50)
* Billericay (20), but it now only meets virtually
* North London (40)
* Brixton (hard to measure due to ambiguities in the Thames Estuary)
* Epsom (50 or 70 depending on how the line is drawn)
* Guildford (80)
* Canterbury (on the coast)
* Brighton and environs (can't be measured due to being on the south coast, but 60 miles inland with an angled line)

There seem to be no clubs in the counties of Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk or Essex (apart from the virtual club). It's the same case with tournaments. These counties have a combined area of about 7,000 square miles, approximately the size of Wales.

I'm considering setting up some infrastructure like a Twitter account that would retweet promotions of clubs and events in the area, or a Discord server that would make it easier for local players to communicate.

Would anyone living in or around East England be interested?

If anyone ever wants to play in Essex, tell me here or on OGS or somewhere else in advance and I'll try to meet up with you.

I'm even open to starting a weekly club if the proposed location is public transport accessible.

Will anyone be at the Norwich Anime & Gaming Con this weekend? If you intend to be, tell me and I might try to make it on Sunday and bring a Go set with me. (I only just found out about the event.) It's not expensive, less than £20 at the door.
