Don't know what book to read next? Have a killer reading list for improving joseki knowledge? This is this place.

Any books about Go variants?

Post by grid »

Are there any books entirely devoted to Go variants or variations? If not, (or even if there are) are there any books that come to mind with good sections on Go Variants?

I'm researching this topic, and so far I've found the following useful:
I'd very much appreciate pointers to further resources!

In 2000, Gionata Soletti showed me his draft of such a book but I have not heard about any publication. Maybe his uncommon experience of life has demotivated finalisation of this project.

You must be a novice. Best way to find Go variants is all kind of encyclopedias, dictionaries.
Fuseki, joseki dictionary. Enclosure Joseki book etc.

Yes! I am certainly a novice. Can you be more specific? Which encyclopedias or dictionaries have this information?

I found dailyjoseki.com to be useful for variations.

A good site, but the original poster (grid) seems to be referring to variations in rules, e.g., the go variants that luigi sometimes creates and posts here. Am I misunderstanding?

You are not misunderstanding.

I have learned that there is a book that was published around 2000:

Go Variants. Franco Pratesi - Alessandro Castillo

If anyone knows how or where to find this book, I would be much obliged!

Those are both very interesting links! Thank you for pointing them out to me. I think there is a wealth of historical information about the various ways Go has been played over time. That is not really my area of interest.

I am primarily interested in different games from Go entirely, but that clearly owe their existence to Go. Defining "What is a Go variant?" will definitely be one of the topics for the introduction to such a book, if I end up writing one.
