Newly Published Set of Go Books

Post by yithril »

Hey all,

I have re-released the "So You Want to Play Go?" series, Levels 1-3 available in paperback at www.sundaygolessons.com I spent some time revising and editing them and I am ready to release them to the Go playing public :) The series is for kyu level players, with each level subdivided for 30-20, 19-10, and 9-1 kyu. The idea is that each book should be review for the rank above who it is intended for, i.e. Level 3 should be review for a 1 dan. They cover a variety of different topics from Opening to Sabaki, and even information on the history and culture of Go, so there is something for everyone.

I discuss more about when/how I wrote them and what they offer on my blog at www.sundaygo.blogspot.com. I'd love to field any questions or comments. I've had good feedback from readers so far, so feel free to contact me.

Change page background ASAP! My eyes hurt from the abuse. It's difficult reading the white text on the greenish background. I'll look more closely at the books when the initial shock has subsided.

Agree, and while you're at it you also might consider another font.

Is there a way to buy a .pdf from those books? Shipping to Brazil usually costs more than the book itself.

As for an e-book format, well I'm working on that but it won't be for awhile, so currently the books will just be available in paper form.

Any thoughts, comments so far? I know some people have already purchased some copies so it'd be nice to have feedback from any of my readers.

I picked up this book a while ago, and since it's kind of below the radar, I figured I'd give it a quick review.

I really enjoyed reading it. The writing is pretty good and has a sense of humor. Because the writer doesn't take himself too seriously, the book is really approachable.

As far as the actual content, it is more a breadth-first overview of a lot of different things you should learn while in the rank range (SDK). While that might seem like shallow overview, the book itself is hundreds of pages long, so each topic has room to be covered enough to teach quite a bit. For example, this book has the single most logical and coherent introduction to probes that I have ever read. Not that I've read too many, but it's a good start. Check out the book if you want a theory book that's easy to read and covers a lot of ground.

I'm going to have to go through the book cover-to-cover a few times to really absorb all of it, I think. Good stuff.
Someday I want to be strong enough to earn KGS[-].

Just a heads up, the tsumego books "Power Builder Series" will be released sometime in November for level 1 and Level 2 sometime in December. Also if anyone has any suggestions for future publications, any topic they'd like to know more about then I'd love to hear them.

If these come out for Kindle, I will probably be getting them.

Largely because A) I will be forced to read things out since I can't mark in it with a pencil B) It's a lot more trouble to flip to the answer so it will help me be more patient trying various possibilities.

I'm looking forward to it.

Just downloaded the Kindle sample. If it's as good as the few reviews indicate I will probably DL the rest. I have been waiting for some Go books for the Kindle. I sure wish they would convert others.

I saw the book and here is my review:

Books by top professionals are usually boring. They have too many diagrams and
only give short explanations. Top amateurs can learn a lot from such books,
but for everyone else they are useless. Books written by middle dan amateurs are different. They often don’t explain why some patterns are outdated and others are still popular.
But is it really necessary for most Go players?
For low dan and kyu players it is still fine to use patterns that were invented
50-100 years ago. In "So You Want to Play Go?" Level 3 you can read the really deep thoughts of the author about strategy and direction of play in fuseki. The book doesn't emphasize rote memorization, but gives you a lot to think about in terms of larger strategy..
I would recommend this book for serious readers between 15k and 5k.

I too have read all three books in the series. It is nice to read a book by someone who has a sense of humor and an ability to write as well as teach Go. Compared to the old Janice Kim books that could really use an update these are both enjoyable to read and contain a great deal more information. It seems that authors of books on Wei Qi have taken the tact of chess books...lots of information and writing that will put anyone to sleep withut the aid of valium. Good to see these books on the market and hope we can find more authors with similar abilities. :D
