Anyone seen a board with the yin-yang symbol in the middle?

General discussions about gobans, etc., go here. If you're selling go equipment, it should go in the Trading Post.

Anyone seen a board with the yin-yang symbol in the middle?

Post by palapiku »

I have a book called "The Game Of Wei-Chi", by Daniele Pecorini and Tong Shu, originally published in 1929. As an introduction to Go it's pretty terrible, but it has some historic value, cute anecdotes, and commented games between classic Chinese players. All the information in the book is from Chinese sources.

The book gives a description of what a Go board looks like, and says that in the middle (on the tengen) of a go board there's a Taiji (Yin-Yang) symbol. All the diagrams have the symbol. It looks really cute. I kinda want a board like that, honestly :)

I've never seen such a board, not even on my Go-oriented trip to Beijing. What's the story? Was such symbolism discouraged by the Communists, or did it just go out of style between 1929 and today? Has anyone seen a board like that?
