Mornington Crescent

Post by fwiffo »

Figured everyone would enjoy a round of Mornington Cresent, so I thought I might as well set up the board. I assume everyone is comfortable playing by modified 2008 rules with the 2010 rule set still deadlocked in committee.

I'll open with Hammersmith.

Do the 2008 rules allow for the ancillary informational intrigues?

Regardless, everyone knows the proper counter for Hammersmith is the Greens over Oxford.

Are we scoring by stations or by lines?

@CSamurai: AII has been permitted since the 1986 Marquis of Newbedford ruling.

@palapiku: 2008 modified officially uses scoring by station, but scoring by lines is mathematically equivalent (proof is trivial.) You failed to take a move on your turn, however, so you suffer a 4.5 point penalty and loss of turn.

I'll move at North Ealing, which is standard for the Irish Gambit. Greens over Oxford indeed.

Clearly, you're not aware of the Weissmann defense, which allows me to send you off to Action Town. It is a new but fairly successful counter to your ancient Irish play.

That's a fine move, but again, we're playing under 2008 modified. South Action would have done more to limit my options because of the switching changes. As it is, I can just transition to Edgware Road and retain the initiative. You can't continue with Weissmann because returning to anywhere on Piccadilly Line on your next move would be an illegal claim of marker.

I must say that I'm uncomfortable. I've never encountered sumikaya or suji's strategies--how will they make up for the aforementioned penalties (could I be in over my head?). Of course those penalties are 5.5 and 7.5 respectively (recursion).

Fwiffo, your early expansion was an interesting dynamic counter to the IG; somehow you still seem to have "sente". I hate to put Hyperpape in zugzwang so early in the game, but the timing is spot on...

Camden Town! (Despite recent tournament results, I still favor more traditional builds.)

I will apply the White 8 compensation -- Arsenal.
So you've got an eye?
That don't impress me much

You're all going for very influenced based openings I see. In that case I'll start safely and take the corner with London Bridge.
Since you specified the 2008 modified :study: fwiffo, I'm going to throw the trumpet onto Paddington. Watch your keys people!

The timing now seems perfect to perform an en passant move to Blackfriars, as it's a well known fact that the green stations have become more strategically valuable in the 2008 rules.

I too am afraid to play, but I applaud the effort in hopes it is a subtle ploy to lure Mr. Fairbairn back to the forum.

It's a bold move to sacrifice both of your bowers so early in the game, topazg. Studying the games of Chauncey von Montmere, perhaps?
