Unless I'm missing something, this seems better for black. The followup could change, but it seems like 6 is the vital point to prevent a killing shape, which would get a seki, as in the real game. But I could easily be missing something. =D
Someday I want to be strong enough to earn KGS[-].

Referring to the game sequence, why not :b8: at :w9: ?
White can make an eye by capturing the black stone but black has enough outside liberties to capture 5 stones back, thus creating an alive eye shape (without seki- i.e. 10 points better for black). I may easily be missing something though.

Apart from that, it's indeed a nice problem. I would be surprised if it turns out that it can be killed.
If you say no, Elwood and I will come here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day of the week.

So it seems like the right thing would be for white to fill outside liberties, which forces black to protect?

Did people consider this 3 ?

2 doesn't seem like an obvious move to me anyway. I'd start to think about something like

After which I have trouble seeing a successful continuation for white. If he captures 4, he runs into shortage of liberty problems.
