New Feature -- Gratitude

Post by apetresc »

There's a cool new feature released this morning. Now you can show your appreciation for those really in-depth posts! Beside every post (except for your own, you narcissist, you!) near the "warning" button there is now an icon like this: Image

Clicking it will add your name to a list of people who have thanked the user for that post; that list appears below the main text of the post itself. The user also receives a gratitude point for every time they get thanked on any post. To see who the most helpful (and grateful) people are, you can use the "Gratitudes" button at the top near the "User Control Panel". This will show each user, all the thanks they've given, and all the thanks they've received. Click on the numbers to see which posts have gotten them attention.

Hopefully this will give us a way to say "thanks" without leaving a giant trail of posts saying just that. Enjoy!

Of course, this feature is new and there may be things we want to tweak about it -- please let us know directly in this post. Now get thanking :)

Cool feature :D. However, maybe it's a bit *too* close to the warning button? I get the feeling someday I will misclick a handful of times...;-).

Well, since this is a kind of + vote, should we also have a - ? :-)

There's a Image icon to cancel out your own Image, but I don't think we wanna be actively disliking posts, do we? :P If it's bad enough to be warned, there's a button for that, otherwise it's probably best just to ignore or refute in a post...

Here's a question for the community -- how do people feel about changing the language on these to "liking" a post instead of "thanking" for a post. It just occurs to me that people generally use this not necessarily to show gratitude but also just to reward a particularly funny post, clever idea, or even just to say that they support a particular point of view in a debate without polluting the thread with "I agree" posts. In that case, "Like this post" makes more sense than "thanks Bob for this post."

Also, it's a super-trivial change to make. What do people think, does this language fit more closely the way people see themselves using this feature?

I think "like" is more natural than "thank", yes.

This is a lot like the BGG "thumbs up" button. But BGG's has a few extra features:

  1. You can thumb a post, to say "this is a good post," or even a whole thread
  2. You can see how many thumbs each post got when you read a thread
  3. You can see how many thumbs a thread got in any list of threads (new posts area, forum lists, etc.)

The third point is the best, because often I'll skim BGG but only visit the most-thumbed posts. If we could get something similar here, that would be great. :)

I'm glad people like "like". I'll change that over.

I'm not quite sure what BGG is, but points #1 and #2 are working exactly that way currently. Each post has its own thumb icon, and any post that has been liked will display not only a count but an actual list of all thankers at the bottom of the post -- try it out! It's not just a per-user total.

#3 is an interesting feature and I fully agree. It's not part of the mod I was using but it shouldn't be too hard to implement. I'll definitely look into that.

Thanks for your feedback!

For a quick intro to the BGG "thumbs", you can visit http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/341 ... orite-game - this is a game review called "Why Go is my Favorite Game"...written by me. :)

As of now, the *thread* has 84 thumbs, and the first post has 47. Click the "84" or the "47" too see exactly who has thumbed the post to show their approval. If you visit http://www.boardgamegeek.com/forum/427/go/reviews you can see all review threads for the game go, and easily see how many thumbs each has gotten, giving a strong hint as to which reviews are most widely liked.

I'm not saying that the "gratitude" system should be exactly like the BGG thumbs, but the thumbs went through several different forms before settling on what they have now, and it works very well so it may be good for ideas.

Instead of "Liked" and "Was liked" I think if should be "Liker" and "Likee"
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).
