Sign-out/sign-in problem
I have just returned from the US where I usually checked L19 each day. However, for the past couple of days I have had an interesting problem, more a minor irritation really.
I connect and I see the board index and I mark as read a couple of fora that don't particularly interest me. I then click view unread posts, pick a topic, read it, click view unread again, pick another topic and so on. However, at some point I will click on view unread and I will see the sign-on screen and I have to sign on again. Usually, when I exit I don't sign off so that when I come back and click on forums (hate that, should be fora, pedant that I am) I automatically see the board index without having to sign on again. Any ideas why it keeps asking me to sign on again in the middle of a session? As I say, it has only started to happen since Sunday.
Best wishes.

Re: Sign-out/sign-in problem
I have had similar problems (logging out when clicking 'View unread') but I assumed it might just be me, so I hadn't said anything yet.

Re: Sign-out/sign-in problem
This has happened five times to me in the past three minutes. If somebody could have a look at this, I would appreciate it.

Re: Sign-out/sign-in problem
This happens sometimes when I read the forum using my smartphone, but never happened on a regular PC web-browser.
Maybe your browsers security/cookie settings?

If you say no, Elwood and I will come here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day of the week.

Re: Sign-out/sign-in problem
This has just started happening recently? Have you tried clearing your cookies for the site? (there's a link at the bottom of the main forums screen) Tried clearing your cache? What web browser are you using? Any new browser plugins/malware? Do you usually visit http://www.lifein19x19.com or just lifein19x19.com? At any point when this happens do you inadvertently switch from one to the other, perhaps by following a link within a thread?

Re: Sign-out/sign-in problem
It has happened for the last week or two. I didn't say anything until TMark mentioned it, because I assumed it was only happening to me because of something on my end. Using IE8, I visit http://lifein19x19.com, and don't notice it changing from that. I don't know specifically when it happens. It gives me a 'sign in' message when I hit 'unread posts', but it probably signed out at some point before that without me noticing. Obviously if I want my unread posts, I'll have to sign back in.
I can try clearing cache and cookies, but I may have before.

Re: Sign-out/sign-in problem
Could this be the ol' http://www.lifein19x19 vs http://lifein19x19 problem striking again?
I always use the www.lifein19x19 link and I never have these problems. Looking at the "View unread posts" link it is pointing to http://www.lifein19x19.com/forum/search.php?search_id=unreadposts
fwiffo, this was fixed, right? (Or at least it should have been.) I see the To Do list page on Sensei's has this listed as working, but maybe this is some thing tangentially related?

Its not the www. vs no www problem. That was fixed.
I was unable to reproduce the problem with IE8 on vista. I would suggest checking cookie settings. the settings I have on my IE8+ My temporary internet files settings are set to Automatically check for newer versions of stored pages. Security settings are medium high, privacy settings at medium, and advanced settings are on default. If changing to those settings do not help then can you tell me, Does it only happen while visiting a specific thread or forum?
I'm thinking...

Re: Sign-out/sign-in problem
I actually had this happen to me once earlier today, but I haven't been able to reproduce it since.

Jordus: I seem to have the same settings as you. If I can figure out for sure where it's logging me out, I'll let you know.

Re: Sign-out/sign-in problem
This time I know it logged me out when I went to the 'Do you like your job' thread.
edit: and just now, the Malkovich forum in one of Zwergesel's games.

Re: Sign-out/sign-in problem
Has there been any info on this problem? I imagine my current troubles may be localized to my machine, as not many others are talking about it. But it is quickly becoming unreadable for me.
I am running OSX 10.6 and using Safari. At best I can view two posts before I have to log in again. At worst, it asks me to log in immediately after notifying me that I have been successfully logged in.
I have so far:
-Cleared the cache.
-Tried both with and without the www.
-Reset and reallowed cookies.
Any hope out there?
Thanks

Re: Sign-out/sign-in problem
Try this... Let me know if it works...
Just FYI, using firefox might prevent this problem...
go into Safari > Preferences > Security > Show cookies
Find the cookies for the domain/site in question and delete them all.
When you reload the site you should be able to login.

Re: Sign-out/sign-in problem
I just had a persistent "instant logout" problem where seconds after a successful login I would be logged out. This was in Firefox 3.6.9, while IE was well behaved. Removing all cookies containing "19x" seemed to solve the problem. (Clicking "remove site cookies" on the main page didn't help, nor did disabling all addins.)
Curiously, I had an identical problem with gmail over the weekend, which went away after several days of using "basic html." Perhaps the offending cookie got zapped over time.
