2011 North American Fujitsu Cup

Post by yoyoma »

http://www.usgo.org/tournaments/Fujitsu/2011/

The NA qualifier for Fujitsu is being played this weekend on KGS. Fung Yun 9p vs Hugh Zhang is being played early right as I type this post.

Edit: Added a poll

On that page, the table headings in the player list are switched (Rating/Account).
A good system naturally covers all corner cases without further effort.

Does anyone know how they choose who to invite? It would make sense (to me) to choose the 16 players with highest rating, but apparently that wasn't done.

Highest 14 US players by rating who met the eligibility requirements.
2 decided by Canada, and I'm not sure what they did beforehand.

Lower ranked players might end up in the tournament because some higher ranked players might not be able to play.

Now, I'm a yank, and therefore convinced that my country is the center of the universe, but why only 2 for Canada?

I didn't quite agree with this either, so I can't explain it other than previous history and told "it will be this way". If you look at the tournament history, it's been this way for quite a while. I'd like to see a seeded field for the qualifier with a bigger preliminary tournament (open to both countries) beforehand to fill out the rest of the slots.

I believe the Canadian seeds were based on size of membership originally - I do not know if the numbers were ever relooked at. Certainly there are many strong players from Canada right now, but the comparative populations may still be correct.

Because of the many strong Canadian players, I was surprised to see that current CGA membership appears to be around 230. So the numbers are roughly proportionate. I would never have guessed.

Because 2 of our best players is surely enough to crush you all! :rambo:

The apparent frontrunner Feng Yun 9p was defeated last night by 17 year old Curtis Tang 7d.

I don't know about apparent front runner since Jie Li defeated her last year before winning the tournament.

And Andy hasn't defeated her also?

So Myungwan is the only player who can ever be declared a front-runner or favorite in any American tournament?

I don't know. I was lazy and was just looking at last year's results. We need an official AGA statistician for these things. :)
