Life without the internet....
So my internet was down for last two hours....
I felt like I was on the verge of hyperventilating....internet addiction?
Glee filled my heart when the internet began working again....
I shall put these thoughts behind me until the next time I may lose my virtual life line....

How can I say this politely...? Get a life!
Seriously, read a book or something. Doesn't even have to be a go book.
Hmm, a good off-topic poll there...

Re: Life without the internet....
Without the internet, I would have missed a lot of beautiful things (friendships), useful / not so useful knowledge and my english would be even more scary.
Topside: I'd have been so much better in so many other things, on which I could have spent the time, I otherwise idle on the net.
Anyway, I have no problems spending time without the internet, when I know I won't have internet =D

Re: Life without the internet....
One of the things I'd like to do someday is live in a Buddhist monastery in Korea like the Bongwonsa, or in an Amish community, for a few years and just cut myself away from the intertubes and technology. Not only would it be a bizarre and interesting experience, but I hear that just living in a place without Internet for a few years really has you realize that the Internet doesn't need to be such a vital part in one's life.

I agree with he positive remarks here.
And I also agree that if I knew I wasn't going to have internet for a while I think everything would be ok. It is the fact that I was on and it just died without warning. The ISP servers decided to take a nap or something.... You can't just take something so important without warning...

Re: Life without the internet....
I recently had two 3 week periods of "downtime" (for both my internet and my mood...)
things I NEED the internet for in order of importance:
- study (online blackboard, looking up information, ect)
- teaching (I give online lessons)
- reading mail (my mailbox is basically my agenda)
The once below I can do without, but are still missed greatly when I have no internet.
- reading the news (I don't get a news paper and have no TV. I can watch tv on my PC but that's not great)
- checking out this forum
- "being available" (msn skype) basically keeping in contact with friends ect.
- a few other forums and websites i check out on a daily basis.

Re: Life without the internet....
I used the Internet very rarely (maybe once every couple of weeks) during a year I spent in Japan, and I had some really great experiences.
When I came back, I was much more ambitious, and I got a lot of things done. I don't know if it's only because I didn't use the Internet, or if other factors were involved. But unfortunately, it wore off after a little while (it was 5 years ago) and now I use the Internet very frequently.

I can vouch for the veracity of that statement. There was no internet for the first forty years of my life.
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

Re: Life without the internet....
Well, I may not be as grumpy and/or old as some, but I do remember life without the internet or even AOL, Compuserve, or private bulletin boards. I also remember television with no cable and only 3 channels to pick from, no cell phones, no personal computers, and no home gaming systems. I even had a paper route to deliver those dying things called "newspapers".
I like the modern conveniences, but I could do without.
