Sounds

Post by Apoah »

Perhaps I am just missing this, but is there anyway to change the sounds that play for the different alarms like auto-match games and chat?

Also, any plans to add a feature so I can turn off the sound of the stones, but leave the alarms?

Thanks!

Sorry, the answer is "no" to all of them. There are some people who have figured out how to pull apart the program and replace the sounds (it isn't hard), but it isn't something officially supported.

But there is a byo-yomi sound. The default setting is to have it start going "bleepbleep...bleepbleep..." at 10seconds.

It would be convenient (but difficult to localize) if there were an option to have it go "ten, nine, ... "

Yes, I didn't do voices because of the localization problem. It's hard enough to get text changed. To get each translator to record themselves counting down, make sure that their voice is "acceptable" (ie clear enough to understand, and pleasant enough to listen to, and loud enough, but not too loud, and etc.)...not something that seemed practical. So it is "bleep-bleep" instead.

I suspect most people can count to ten in English. They must have learned that in school, if they learned anything.

At any rate, it doesn't seem fair to deny most users such a useful option just because there are one or two people who wouldn't be able to use it.

Why not a "record" option so you can record your own sounds for countdown.
no need for different language that way.

PS: For me it's fin the way it is.

Well, if you consider it so useful...but to me, the bleeps are just as good as a voice. In fact, nicer and less distracting. Maybe it's my experiences with the old Ing clocks that scarred me here, but I don't want to hear a voice talking at me as I play.

Recording your own is an idea but a fair amount of work. It is also getting into the "here's this crappy app, now skin it and tweak it to make it decent" territory that really makes my skin crawl.

My problem with bleeps is that they all sound the same and so I don't know how many I have left.

Just to elaborate, I don't think making English an option that can be selected in lieu of beeps is terrible. I'm of the camp that says it's ok to break localization once in a while. But bleeps are clearly fair--they treat everyone equally, and it's not like they're an awful thing for the English speakers. Suboptimal, maybe, but not awful or unfair.

And English voices really suck for people who don't speak English, if it's the default or the only option. Imagine if you fired up KGS, and all of a sudden it started saying things in Chinese to you. You don't know what they mean, and you don't know how important they are. And they keep happening for the rest of the game. So what if it's only one game--it's the kind of experience that would leave a permanent bad taste in your mouth.

What about using a musical scale?

I think regardless of culture, people can regard Middle C very much like zero.

So on ten seconds, you play the E above an octave about Middle C, and then count down with major notes to middle C.

E, D, C, B, A, G, F, E, D, C.

Or some kind of similar tonal progression.

I know some servers put a countdown that ticks down on the stone just played to make it more visible to the player.
