I never played on 9x9 while learning (learned playing 19x19 on IGS...), started recently, enjoying it a whole lot. I don't know any 9x9 specific theory - I'm just going to aim for accuracy and complexity in my reading this game...

Good luck Redundant. Also, how's Japan treating you ?

I`m not really good at 9x9 strategy, so I`ll just go with mirror go for this move. I`ll decide when to deviate later.

I too never played on a 9x9 while learning. I just started recently, and I play much weaker on the 9x9 board, because it`s all tactics and endgame. It`s definitely a totally different beast than the 19x19.

Japan has been amazing. I got to play a 1k at the Ki-in and beat him pretty well. I also managed to pick up some tsumego book that`s very interesting. On a non-Go front, Kyoto had awesome temples, and the Obon festival was amazing.

Good luck to both of you!

It will be interesting following a smaller game like this.

A point handicap white usually gets to compensate for black's initial sente. But that's not important right now. (if the reference escapes you)

I think they meant to ask what the value of komi is...

Again, I'm a little new to this -

$$ | . . , . e . , . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . |
$$ | . . . . . . . . . |
$$ +-------------------+[/go]

The general starting dynamic I've been using is to build a position on the lower side, then dodge into their side with an aim of the game becoming close. Anyway, if white a, I'll b (shape). If white c, I'll probably d. If e, I'll a. If white f, I think I'll still d. If <contact play> I'll nobi if it's "above" me to get some eyes starting to happen, or hane if it's below me.

Oh, I believe we're using New Zealand Rules.
Essentially superko (no repeated board positions), komi=7, area scoring. (The superko rule stops single stone suicide, but not multiple stone suicide. Komi being a whole number, ties are possible.)

My gut is telling me that I can't allow black to simply divide the board between us. That way, black's first move advantage is very difficult to overcome.

I do feel like this may be an overplay. He might be able to let me live small, and then kill my other stone. But this is a risk I'm willing to take (also, this way the game is more fun!).

To Redundant:
White gets a gigantic 7 point komi though, do you feel that playing a calm game still favors Black in this situation?

To Aphelion:
The problem (for me, at least) is that if you don't play aggressively as white, you need to have very good endgame skills, because the endgame will start at move five, and black has sente. It takes better endgame than I'm capable of to keep the game close enough to win on komi.

Would you like to restart ?

(I gotta distract you so I can win that ko somehow)

Edit: Oh, you broke the ko somehow already. Are you alive there already? Dead ? Are we just moving on to a different ko ? ???????

Also; if I am in a Malkovich game with you (Shaddy, MW) I resign if I haven't mentioned it to you already).

I could probably live on the bottom, but the thickness would really mess with my top stone. That may still happen, but now we're going to go down in flames :D
