Hi - you don't know me!

Post by judicata »

I never posted on GD for one reason, and one reason only: I could never successfully register! So this is quite liberating for me, actually.

I am a young professional in NYC (anyone?), and I learned to play Go in college. I put the goban away for a few years and started playing again a few months ago. Years ago, I was probably no greater than 19k, and when I started again I was even weaker. Now, I'm definitely stronger than I ever was (dunno, 15kyu?), which is definitely exciting. I truly believe that playing Go leads me to make better, more thought-out decisions in real-life (e.g., if I do THIS, what will happen?).

I am also very interested in the philosophy of studying go, even though I'm a "weak" player. For example, I'm sure to be involved in discussions on how efficient it is to memorize certain elements of the game (e.g., joseki) as opposed to just "winging it" and the many degrees that exist between those two extremes.

After lurking and watching your posts, I feel like I know some of you already. So I'm looking forward to actually participating and contributing (by posting or otherwise).

Thanks!

Hey, welcome! Glad you're joining us now that you can. I'd be interested in what you've learned in studying the philosophy of learning go. The gang here's helpful, so if you have any questions people will usually be very informative. Particularly with the Malkovich games, make sure you ask if you'd like to have things explained.
Someday I want to be strong enough to earn KGS[-].

I'm from NYC too, although I go to college upstate.

I was in the same boat. Actually registered, but couldn't get the full "acceptance" (or whatever) that would actually allow me to post. Welcome to our new home. :)
