Whose quip was that JF?

Post by ez4u »

Ten years ago in a thread on RGG - Purpose of Byo-Yomi - John Fairbairn wrote "...How about a well known quip from a shogi pro: for amateurs, thinking time is dream time?". I have always liked that quote and think of it every time I read something on timing systems. My questions for John are: who was the shogi pro and what was the original quip (presumably in Japanese)? Thanks in advance! :study:

I heard it from shogi pro Aono Teruichi. It was in a conversation so I can't remember how he expressed it, but it made a strong impression on me because he and fellow pro Awaji were doubled up in laughter when he revealed it.

I gleaned that it was one of many things pros say about amateurs behind their backs, and so I have not seen it written down in that form, but I have many times seen the same sentiment written down in a more indirect way.
