Trip to China: What to buy?

Slate & shell stones are not made in China, they're imported from Japan so you'll pay similar prices as anywhere. Also, they're not so easy to find. I searched all the go-stores in one particular sports-megamarket, and I could find only one set of slate & shell stones on offer for like 4000 yuan... So if you really want slate & shell, better import them directly from Japan

I went to Japan last March. I noticed pretty standard slate and shell stones being sold at the Kansai Go Institute for about 23,000 yen.

I'm going to be in China in July and asked myself, what I should buy (Go-related)? Maybe you guys have some ideas to share?
So far, I want to buy (I took this list as a reference):

• Lee Chang Ho's Selected Life and Death Go Problems
• Lee Chang Ho's Selected Tesuji Go Problems
• Weiqi Life and Death 1000 Problems
• Weiqi Life and Death Drills
• (white) Yuki (I don't know how affordable they are in China) Go-stones

Focus is on Life-and-Death/Tesuji-books because my chinese is not yet good enough to really read a book.

Any input? =)

Hi, I too will be making a trip out to China this summer, and I would like to know if you have any advice on things I should buy while out there, and what kind of budget I should set for myself, as I do not want to get too out of hand there. Also, I am going to have a layover in New York for a night, so I am looking into some Cheap NY Hotels, and also thinking about doing the Radio City Music Hall Stage Door Tours. Anyone have any suggestions for what I should do or where I should stay while in New York also? Thanks.

Lee Changho books are 12 yuan each (about $2), for all 12 books that's $25.
Weiqi Life and Death 1000 problems is 30 yuan ($4.60).

Most go books will not cost more than 30 yuan; many cost much less.

As cdybeijing stated, Go books are very cheap over there. The rest depends on what do you want to do and where you are?
Generelly China is really cheap when it comes to local food (<2€ for lunch, less when you buy food on the streets [this depends where you are and you might need the right stomach for this, I ate "street food" and it did not effect me negatively most of the times]) and groceries (like Beer <50 cent ^^). Anything foreign will cost at least as much as in the west when not more - we bought a small bread and cheddar one time for >6€ in total.

Hotels are also cheap except for Shanghai, Beijing and of course Hongkong. Generally the less known the town, the less it will cost you (like everywhere). The biggest issue was always how clean the rooms (and the hotel in general) were or if the shower was working. If you are in a hotel, where no one speaks English, this might get tricky if you can't speak chinese. So better check beforehand, where to sleep.
This may sound off but hotels with something like a "Bath Recreational Center" are a lot cleaner. Just be sure, you - accidentely - don't drop off in the wrong floor then.

If you want to visit a lot of touristic places, this will definitely sum up. Prices are still kind of resonable compared to the west but compared to anything else in China, there are pretty high.

I spent ~1000€ excl. flight in one month while visiting Shanghai, Beijing, Hongkong and some not so well known places (+ the touristic stuff). I also had a suit tailored and bought a lot of Go books ^^ We went quite often to Starbucks since they had western food, coffee and free WLAN. So, you can spent a lot less depending on how good you can accomodate and how high you value cleanliness (some of us slept in the student dormitory and paid close to nothing).

I would recommend you skip Shanghai and HK unless there is a specific reason
They are metopolitan cities just like any other and Beijing is enough
Try some of the other cities like Xian, Chongqing, Chengdu instead
