so Im 10k on kgs, automatched for a even game with another 10k, 25 minutes
in the mid game I attacked one of his weak group and gained territory from attacking, so Im winning
and he starts to tell me to "hurry up"
original words: "Im just 12k, you shouldnt think that long"
I didnt reply at first, then he said: "hurry up, Im letting you win obviously, Mr. 10k"
this time I replied kindly saying you should match for a blitz, not a slow game
then at yose he escaped the game as soon as he typed the words "f**k you"

here's the sgf and username so you should never play him
the funny thing is I got automatched again to him 2 times in a row, so I ended up closing games..sigh

The escaping part is kind of annoying, but I wouldn't be too bothered by comments. You can take his escaping as a resignation.

A poor attitude may contribute to slower growth in the long term (though, this is just my speculation).

Usually if I sense aggressiveness in someone's comments..I just ignore them
but somehow I replied to him and I think that made him more angry
I guess I will shut my mouth except for the "hi" at the beginning =(

You should censor him, so that you don't get automatched against him again.

i always have to wonder who such people are. probably some kids who can't stand losing and don't care about others.

the escaping part is unpleasant, especially due to KGS's ineffective escapers handling policy, but often if you write PM to an escaper, he eventually returns and resign. last time when i encountered one, i kept writing him every time i connected to the server (in a way "i am waiting for you to finish our game") and he resigned after a week. of course, sometimes they never return to KGS again, then this solution is inapplicable

Perhaps the proper thing to do is ignore the comments. But I usually end up responding once or twice very politely, and maybe add a little self-deprecating humor to defuse the situation (which sometimes works) and then end up provoking them by being overly polite.

I never speed up my play.

Just to add - NEVER close an automatch game. Then you are the escaper. Even if you close before move 1, you are counted as an escaper. Beat him again and make him escape again; once he does it enough you will get your wins.

And, as Oren says, censoring him works well also.

You should not resign ranked games where your opponent escaped unless you're significantly behind. That hurts the ranking system and prevents the escape counter from counting these games against your opponent.

Yes, exactly. If you are caught throwing a game, you will be deranked. If you can't stand to play somebody then you *SHOULD* escape. Yes, you heard me right, it's better to escape than it is to throw the game. Now if you do this enough to have your escapes turn into forfeits, then you have issues of your own, but certainly if somebody makes a game so unpleasant that you can't finish it (and what they do isn't worth going to an admin over) then just leave. Do *NOT* resign unless you are behind.

Whilst I respect this opinion, I don't consider it the only correct one. The ranking system is not the be all and end all of a Go server's validity, and I would rather resign a game my opponent has escaped (and have done so a few times) than have them clogging up a list of active games of mine. That's partly because I have an OCD of cleaning up loose ends, but it's also because I don't want it sitting there as a constant reminder of a game of mine with an unpleasant taste.

If he escaped and I resigned, it should still count as an escape for him. If it counts against my rating, I can live with that, because it's not that important to me anyway. If I was in a club and someone I was playing was being a total jerk, I reserve the right to resign that game too, even if I'm winning. Go is just a game after all, and I'm not going to be tied to a situation that I find makes the experience of playing Go worse, simply to preserve a system that could feasibly be coded differently (RE: escapers). I understand and appreciate wms' reasons for doing the escaper system as he has, and I think it's a perfectly valid way of doing it even I wouldn't have done it that way myself. Likewise, I consider my approach to handling escaped games perfectly valid, even if it wouldn't be what other people would have done in my shoes.

I don't think that's quite correct, because there is no way to know that you didn't have a communication out of band in which you agreed to let him out of the "escape" because you would have resigned anyway.

Ideally, there should be a way to let the opponent off the hook of being branded as an escaper for normal events such as network trouble. This is a consistent with the KGS philosophy of not treating every disconnect as a forfeit after 5 minutes, like IGS does. (BTW, despite the fact that IGS does that, I don't think their rating system is irrevocably damaged due to it.)

It sounds like what you may want is a way to claim the forfeit in a reasonable amount of time. Maybe if it's your friend, you let the game hang unfinished in the record until you opponent has a chance to continue, but if it's a jerk, you can opt to the claim the forfeit after a few minutes? (Of course, then many people will treat everyone like jerks, so I'm not sure that's necessary to handle this edge case.)

An analogy can be made to real life tournaments, where sometimes a player will show up late and his opponent may either choose to start the clock or be lenient and wait a little until the TD forces it. IRL, there is some pressure to start the clock or declare forfeits because future rounds have to be paired and started, but online this typically is not an issue except for tournaments with fixed round start times.

I agree there is the philosophical issue of whether one is entitled to resign for any reason or no reason. An occasional resignation just because one is digusted with one's play or one's opponent is not the same as a desire to sandbag.

The problem is, topaz, it doesn't just screw up your rating. It screws up the rating of everyone you or the jerk have played. For those other people, I'm sure they would prefer to have a more accurate rating over you getting a game list with no unfinished games. Your statement of "well it's more important to me to have a clean game list" is a little bit honking a loud horn every hour through the night because "it's more important to me to have the hours marked than to get a good night's sleep." Well, sure, for you it may be, but for your neighbors they probably would prefer you learn to deal without always knowing the hour and let them have a quiet night.

If you are seen doing this by an admin, you will be deranked. Please do not do it.

Except here the guy is breaking up car windows all across the street and honking their horns and
once an owner comes and puts his car in his garage you threaten to impound it.
Escapers hurt the ranking system on purpose, yet even if it is blatantly obvious, admins do not get involved and derank them.
The priorities are severely broken here. And if it's because you cannot judge if it's on purpose or not, i don't see how you can
distinguish resigning a game because you feel behind or disgusted with the escaper.

Edit:
As a side note there is no way to just invalidate a game, which comes at no loss to the escaper since he cannot enforce a continuation
anyway if he is winning. That would make this and many other issues go away easily.

Wow, so a player may get punished for resigning a game on KGS? OK. Glad I no longer play there.

thats severely out of context.

i agree on the part wms said about resigning an escaped game, you hurt the entire system a bit every time you do so.

the part about resigning on purpose but getting deranked for such an act seems a bit like punishing the wrong person too severly. Maybe you could have those matches completely forfeited or turned into free games or even deleted (invisible) from the server.

If you had a habit of resigning won games, then I also am glad that you no longer play on KGS.

I had no such habit. However, since resigning is one of the actions a player is entitled to make during their turn then the only effect it should have on rank is the loss of the game. Anything else is just a flaw in the implementation of the ranking system.

Sorry for butting into the discussion.
