I always pick (i+1) stones, and let people argue whether that's even or odd.

Heh, good poll Topazg. :)

For whatever reason, I prefer even numbers and will tend toward those picks (thus my even pick in the poll). In nigiri, though, I'll often second guess myself for no reason whatsoever.

Also, if I'm actually picking up the stones, I never think about it and just grab a random number of stones, then let fate decide. Try and second guess me now, opponent! :P

To every even number belongs one unique odd number. Halve the even number as many times as possible.
To every odd number belongs an infite collection of unique even numbers. Double the odd number one, two ,three ... times.
Because there are far more even numbers than odd numbers the chance of picking even is about 100%. So the answer is Even of course.

1 2 4 8 16 ..
3 6 12 24 48 ..
5 10 20 40 80 ..
7 14 28 58 116 ..
...............

Above are listed all natural numbers, each one only once. You should admit that picking an odd number is unlikely.

Studies of people's behavior in lottery situations have shown that people are more likely to choose odd numbers than even numbers. So, since in lotteries, unless they're fixed, even and odd are equally likely, you are more likely to win if you pick half even numbers.

Isn't every number half an even number?

 irrefutable
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

topazg wrote:I'll be honest, I was wondering if there was a correlation between how people saw their style as a player (aggressive, calm etc) and whether they picked odd or even. When I chose 17 against Dave in our Malkovich, I picked it thinking "he strikes me as a very reasonable, calm player, I bet he'll pick even". I was right, but meh, sample of 1 on a 50-50 decision? So what! So, instead, I made this poll, and thought I'd post this after enough people had voted.

Do people think they are likely to pick an even spread of odd and even numbers, are likely to pick their favourite / lucky numbers more often than not, or likely that their guess of odd or even is affected by either their own personality traits, or their guesses of the personality traits of their opponent?

Well... my lucky number is... odd.

My style is... crazy aggressive/defensive based on a random combination of honte, hamete, and just plain overplays (and I like it this way).
in nigiri, I just let my opponent pick for me, so he gets what he wants. If he/she refuses, I pick at random - based on the environment. if there are, for example, even number of chairs in the room, I pick even. Its all so meaningless to me... personally.

Hope this helps.
