Me (?k) vs Aya (10k?)

Post by Signifier »

Hi, this is a game I recently won against the computer program Aya at its "Strong" setting which is... I think "10 kyu" or around there (anyone with more experience know more?) About me: I started playing go in early June, I like it and have so much to learn. I don't really know what I'm doing yet, I mostly try to attack, stay connected, cut, etc. This is my first time trying to get a game analyzed.

Anyway, I am black and I won by 20.5 points. Nevertheless I'm sure the game is rife with crazy and questionable moves- I'd like to know what I could do better (probably every move could be better) and which moves were utter nonsense. I promise I will post a game against a human soon, but most of my human games so far are played irl on wood. When I do post a human game, I'll try to post one where I get heavily punished for my mistakes :)

Gracias/thank you/спасибо!

Here are my comments. Beginning at :b19:, the bottom-right had a very important move that sat without getting played, so I hope you can try to understand why it's important :) .

P.S. Aya's garble of text on move 1 seems to somehow be messing up the forum's sgf support, so that's why it's not displaying correctly for you. Deleting the text Aya left on move 1 fixes the problem.

We don't know who we are; we don't know where we are.
Each of us woke up one moment and here we were in the darkness.
We're nameless things with no memory; no knowledge of what went before,
No understanding of what is now, no knowledge of what will be.

FWIW, Aya doesn't seem to be like 10k. I play even on it at 7 stones and have beaten it recently on 9 stones. So I think 14-15k is a better estimation.

Thank you both for replying.
Dusk: "Hane at the head of two stones," so I should have prevented the hane (which is what a stronger white would have moved). OK. I will try to absorb your other comments as well. I admit that I often play wasted moves like capturing stones that don't need to be captured; and I do need to try to have a clear goal in mind for all my moves (I think I play go too quickly, without thinking about each move enough).

karaklis: Is the Aya download different than AyaBot (http://www.gokgs.com/graphPage.jsp?user=AyaBot)? Either way, Aya challenges me (for now).

The AyaBot is obviously different. I liked playing Aya when I was weaker, and sometimes still do it if I need something to crush. Or I play it with handi stones (6-9). As you become stronger, the program can still be a challenge for you if you give it enough handi stones. The benefit is that you get some practice with handicap matches.

I have reviewed this game and found many moves of mine to seem odd now, so hopefully I'm growing! Also, karaklis, I contacted the programmer for Aya and he assured me that AyaBot is the same as the program Aya, they should be the same strength. Of course "bot strength" doesn't seem nearly as stable or meaningful as "human strength". But it's interesting nonetheless.
