Magnetic Go sets

General discussions about gobans, etc., go here. If you're selling go equipment, it should go in the Trading Post.

Magnetic Go sets

Post by Inkwolf »

I got that cheap magnetic set sold as 10 Lines Go Game on Ebay.

It's adequate for quick games, though it came with sticky little magnetic inserts that did not actually stick very well, so I had to use super glue to attach the magnets to the plastic stones. (So, they are rather crusty from glue drift, as were my fingers on the day I glued them. But hey, it just might be the first Go set ever played at Lambeau Field, which makes it potentially unverifiably historic.)

But I've found that what I use it most for is replaying examples from books, and 10 lines is not very convenient for that. So I may have to bite the bullet and put more money into Go equipment.

There are several different brands of magnetic Go available on Ebay, and I'd like to avoid the whole nasty glue issue if possible this time. Does anyone have a particular set to recommend?

Thanks, but neither of those links gives me the info I need. I asked for recommendations of specific sets, based on quality and whether they have something other than lousy glued-in magnets.

Hopefully a shop closer to you carries these.
As far as I can see these magnets will never come out, it seems like they are bigger than the hole (but I could be wrong here).
Anyways, this is the best value for money magnetic set (as well as one of the best magnetic sets no matter the price) I have seen.

Thanks, Mohsart! That does look like a fabulous set. I've never seen it available to order around the US, though.

I ended up going with this item. It's smallish, and I'm not a fan of roll-up boards, but it says the stones are solid metal.
