When to Invade?

Post by Redbeard »

This was a quick pick-up game on KGS to keep my rank from creeping up too far, but I would like to hear some opinions on how I could have kept black from taking the bottom of the board. By the time I got around to invading (~move 40) it was too late and I just helped him build a wall across the middle of the board. Your comments are appreciated.

I don't feel confident to say when you should invade or what move to do, but :w26: and :w36: were definitely small moves.

Yeah, the problem there is not how to invade, it's that you shouldn't have to in the first place. As Ed said, for 14, split, don't cower in the corner. :) I think you can only play 3-3 there if you intend to cut and fight like crazy afterwards. Playing moves like 16 and 18 should make you feel physically ill!

Thanks for the comments everyone. I got sucked into a territory based game and was outside of my usual style (I like big moyos and I can not lie). I can see where move 14 would make a big difference. I did wince when I played it

:w16: and :w18: are terrible. They are saying, I give up, you win.

:w32: and :w34: send a similar message, though they are not as bad. :w36: does not do much.

Are they at least in context with :w14:? I was trying to make something after that bad move. Would it have been better to tenuki after :w14: and take my lumps?

:w14: is not such a bad move. Cutting the sector line is better, but :w14: is on a vital point for both sides. Better to push and cut after :b15:. :)

Bill ninja'd me, but my answer was going to be:

'Fraid not. :w14: says "Now I'm alive in the corner. Next, I plan to cut your group to pieces and kill them all. " Just living tiny in the corner like that would be a loss if it doesn't give you a good attack on an opponent's group or some other additional benefit.
