can you kill this 3-3 invasion?

That's what you call "bad" handwriting? I'll have to find some of my old college notes. Of course I never used my notes, so maybe that's why I never learned to make good ones.

I thought that Araban's handwriting is okay. At least I can make out what he is writing.

This always annoys me. "Doctor" means "teacher". Physicians usurped the title and have tried to make it their own. At least in the US a physician has an MD degree. In Britain, unless it has changed since I left, the "family doctor" doesn't even need a doctoral degree, only and MB degree.

Why is a person with an MD degree always referred to as "Dr.", whereas a person with a JD degree just about never is, and PhDs are frequently referred to as "Mr."?
Still officially AGA 5d but I play so irregularly these days that I am probably only 3d or 4d over the board (but hopefully still 5d in terms of knowledge, theory and the ability to contribute).

In some countries, at least in Germany I believe, doctors are practically always addressed as Herr/Frau/Fräulein Doktor, no matter which discipline. Perhaps someone from there can confirm this.

"Fräulein" (unmarried woman) is not in use anymore, as one doesn't emphasize the status of marrige anymore.

But yeah, "Doktor" is the title of a physician after studying six years (then you go for the "Facharzt", your medical specialization - needs four extra years practice and a test, if I remember correctly).
And the title of one who wrote a dissertation (which got accepted) in a certain discipline is "Doktor" aswell.

The usual practice in parts of Asia is: for those who don't have a Ph.D. to address whose who has a Ph.D. as "Dr.". With an increasing number of people who has Ph.D. in the population, some of them are actually requesting people not to address them by "Dr.". Go figure.

Hi,

that white can safely ignore the turn of Black 1 is the reason for which white plays the otherwise bad exchange earlier (pushing on the second line).

Kind regards

Writing the [go] tags in the math notes is especially funny. Can you cut and paste from there to L19?

The turning at :b1: is not sente against the corner. This is actually the reason that White adds another crawl on the second line.

Unkx80 showed the simplest, most usual way. This problem is actually quite easy (okay I'm being biased). But it should be solvable for 3k-1d in an actual game.

I think these basic sort of "L" shapes should be completely known by every Dan player.

I think western players as a whole, all have a basic weakness of reading. Compared to players in asian countries, we do far too little of these problems. That's why a 3 dan, for example, from Canada, would probably struggle with 1d problems. I know that is struggle with some 5d and 6d ones sometimes on goproblems.com.

I have several friends who are below their level at reading by far. I think nearly all Go players that I know in person are like this!
